These plates are a celebration of the Palio—a wild and intoxicating horse race that takes place in the main piazza of Siena, Italy. Each piece displays a symbol that correlates to one of the teams, based on the different districts in the city.

Lupa (The She-Wolf): Traditionally, the residents of Lupa were bakers. The she-wolf of this contrada refers to the legend that Siena was founded by Senius and Aschius, the sons of Remus, who were raised by a wolf. Because of this, Lupa’s sister city is Rome. Lupa has no allies; its rival is Istrice, since 1934.
